On October 1st, Kinasi Lodge reopened its doors, welcoming guests back to a transformed haven on Mafia Island. After five months of intense rebuilding and remodeling in the aftermath of Category 3 Cyclone Hidaya, we are proud to introduce a refreshed Kinasi, blending sustainability, modern comforts, and timeless coastal charm.
A Fresh Look for a Timeless Escape
After 28 years of hospitality, we felt it was time to evolve. Our remodeling project was driven by three key goals:
- Reflecting our guests’ evolving needs
- Adapting to changing climate patterns for sustainability
- Enhancing comfort and modern aesthetics
The new Kinasi features a minimalist architectural design with flat, green roofs, ensuring temperature regulation and environmental harmony. Our rooms, including the honeymoon suite and Swahili two-bedroom villa, have been re-imagined as cozy, private villas with bright, coastal-inspired interiors and modern amenities.
Family-Friendly and Exclusive Spaces
We’ve introduced a four-room exclusive area designed for families and special interest groups, complete with a private pool and alfresco cafeteria. This setup ensures that families can enjoy quality time without disturbing the tranquility Kinasi is known for.

From the green roofs on our Pool Grill and guestrooms to the thoughtful landscaping, sustainability is woven into every corner of Kinasi. The cyclone’s impact allowed us to reimagine our gardens, replacing lost trees and flowering shrubs with lush, resilient greenery that offers both beauty and privacy.
Elevated Dining and Hospitality
The Pool Bar & Red Hot Grill and the Sunset Bar & Wine Cellar have been completely rebuilt, offering guests a culinary experience as exquisite as the views over Chole Bay. Our commitment to sustainability extends to our kitchen, with locally sourced ingredients and eco-friendly practices.

Despite our upgrades, we’ve kept our 2025-26 rates competitive, offering full board at prices lower than comparable luxury hotels in the Mafia Archipelago and Zanzibar. Special pricing models are available for agents promoting scuba diving, snorkeling, and whale shark excursions.
Expanding Water Sports and Wellness
Our investment in water sports facilities continues with new boats, upgraded dive equipment, and fuel-efficient four-stroke engines. The Blue World Dive Centre welcomes a new instructor for the upcoming season, and our beloved Isis Spa is set to welcome a new therapist, continuing the legacy of relaxation after Mama Oei’s retirement.
